On Sunday I was working away in my office and as the day went on, noted a pool of water outside the entrance growing larger and larger- to the point I contacted the council as I was concerned about flooding. On Monday I had the joy of road patrol morning and afternoon- I wore my wet weather and warm clothing and braved the very cold temperatures. On Tuesday I had road patrol again and stood enjoying the beautiful sunshine, no need for a jacket, gumboots or umbrella, just my sunglasses! Now today, Friday after heavy rain I came to school to find another huge puddle, what weather we have!
Life is a bit like this, there are times that feel a bit stormy and times that feel calm; we are challenged to adjust. It's important to remember that we can get through the tough times by calling on friends, changing our thinking or seeking help if we need it. It is also important to recognise and show gratitude for the blessings we receive.
The photos below show our wonderful tamariki making and testing out boats to float in our giant puddle; an example of turning a not ideal situation into a learning opportunity.

On Sunday 15 August, Aotearoa New Zealand will be re-dedicated to Mary Assumed into Heaven, a dedication first carried out by Bishop Pompallier in 1838. The himene, Mō Maria, which was composed by Bishop Pompallier may be known to many of you. Over the years the versions, pronunciations and melodies of the hymn have varied from Pompallier’s original. This has made it more difficult for people to sing the hymn harmoniously. The August 15 rededication of the country to Mary provides an opportunity to promote Mō Maria as a national Catholic anthem.
Mary Mother Of God. Writing and drawing by Matlida
I think Mary is an inspiring person because she gave birth to a special person, Jesus. Mary had a strong faith, She was kind and hardworking! She raised Jesus so well and he grew up as an amazing kind person!
Mary was really brave and she was a strong woman. Also, when this story happened it was hard to have food everyday. Mary was a great woman! She inspires me by being brave and trusting in God and the Angels. Mary was a great mother to Jesus. She is also the mother of everyone else, she is the patroness of Aotearoa.
After 33 years Mary saw her son get crucified. 14 years later Mary passed and went to heaven, body and soul because she's special.
My own prayer about Mary
Dear Mary, please bless everyone out there who isn't brave enough to do things, please can you help them, and guide them in their hard times. Give them the courage to share their emotions and true self. Let them know that they are able to do the impossible.
Amen

Singing at the RED Show!
At the Michael Fowler Centre we got to find our lounge to put our bags
then we had a rehearsal. I met two of the stars and we had breaks in-between
practices.
Then came the show…………………………..
When I came in to do the show I saw more than 500 people in there so I was nervous, like really nervous.
We started singing and when I was watching the stage at the same time I saw Granny's feet under the table by mistake on the scene where they were at Granny's and Granny got eaten.
Some of the story was different because in this show Granny did not get eaten. She got trapped under the table because it was real life... so the wolf is not an actual wolf, if he ate Granny he would have been fat.
We sang My favourite food, watch out, nene nene, we are sorry we hurt you and that's all. When we had to get picked up we had to get our raincoats. We went downstairs to get picked up and get our name ticked off. And that was the whole day at Red because it was 1.30pm when we left school and then it was 8.00pm when we left to go home.

Yesterday we went to Red. Red is an Opera. Some of Holy Cross did Red which was Room five, Room six and Room three. We did it with four other Schools .
We used the bus to get to the Michael Fowler Centre. After we got there we went inside and were greeted. We had to stay there until 8 o'clock and we got there at 2pm.
We had to do the performance with 4 other schools. The names of the schools were: Miramar North, Kelburn, Northland and Newtown School.
Once we were greeted we got taken to a lounge where we could eat and drink before we had the dress rehearsal and the real performance.
We had the first dress rehearsal and it was kind of boring because we didn't do much except sing and sing!
After our first rehearsal we could go back to the lounge to eat and drink before our main rehearsal. This was the rehearsal that we could do a practice performance.
The second Rehearsal was like the performance but it wasn't.We did all the singing, acting and everything.
We had to sing a few songs twice or three times, it took one hour to do the practice performance because we had to get everything perfect; it was very special.
After that we had a half an hour to rest because everyone was tired and then came the big performance. There were so many people and so many eyeballs staring at us I bet everyone was a bit nervous.
The performance took one hour and a bit. Some of us messed up a bit because we thought the ‘My favourite foods’ parts went in a different part.
The performance went really, really well. Everyone did it well because we practised so many times. Everyone thought it was funny and cool, it was even recorded by Radio New Zealand.
It was very loud after the performance was finished because everyone was talking and clapping for us! We had to go back to the lounge and we got picked up by our parents.

Red Opera
Last week Rooms 3,5 and 6 went to RED Opera with Kelburn, Northland, Newtown and Miramar North Schools. The actors were Wolfie, Granny/Mum and Red. Our schedule to get to RED was to leave at 1:30pm. We had to get on the bus so we could get to the Michael Fowler Centre quickly to be ready to start at 2 p.m. We had time to have a little snack before we had our first rehearsal even though we made a few mistakes I still think we did great! At the show after the first rehearsal we went back to the lounge to have a little afternoon tea break before our second rehearsal. We did better than before and made lots of improvements but break time for our show was quite the chaotic storm. At 7:00pm there were thousands of eyes staring at us, even my family and others. It was a lot but we tried our best and showed them what we've got. It was tiring but we did our best and never showed our worst. I appreciated our performance and was proud of what we did; we had to practice and practice we still succeeded.

My story of Red the Opera
By Sam Rm 5
I remember that Red was right next to me. It was such a fulfilling experience. I never knew that just a play would take so much to do. It was so amazing and went so fast that I can barely remember it.
At first Wolfie was very hungry and it made him look at us weirdly and it was very scary .There were roughly 200 to 300 people there at the MFC. It was so amazing and there were different schools helping each other in the play.
It was a once in a lifetime experience with 4 to 5 schools helping each other into one big thing. When my school stood up to sing it was great. I can not describe how overwhelmed I was. The end was the best bit because we all bowed.
Behind the scenes - A look at the Opera Red
Do you care about bullying? If so, let me talk about RED! At the Michael Fowler Centre I performed the opera along with other schools and the best opera singers in New Zealand. It was very exciting but I was also quite nervous.
At the start of the opera I sat down with Jonathan and watched Red sing Red Rouge Russo then we stood up and sang our first song. A baby in the audience yelled "bleh"! and lots of kids laughed!
In the middle we sang a song and then we had to stay standing to watch the boxing match, "POW! WHAP! Oh no! What happened to Granny"? At the end, Wolfie stuck a plunger to Granny's face and locked her in the chest.
At the end Wolfie became a vegetarian and Red became a hero. I was very tired afterwards and I went straight to bed once I got home. While the opera seemed like a normal fairytale it was actually based on bullying.

Last week Room 3 were at Garden to Table.
In the garden we learned how to put together a compost bin and we found bugs next to the scrap pile.
I moved some soil from a bucket and put it into the compost. We were learning about how bugs are good for the garden, how we should keep them in the garden and they remind you that the soil is of good quality. We looked at sunflower seeds, where they came from and how they looked. We went to Jimmy’s shed and looked at a net made of metal and wood. We will use it for keeping rats out of the compost.
One thing we needed to be careful about was hanging up wet gloves so they dry and we don’t get cold wet hands.

In the kitchen we made tabbouleh with Aleksandra. We chopped up parsley, tomatoes, cucumbers, spring onions, added lemon juice and couscous mixed it all together. Something that I felt went well was fetching the parsley. I think we need to be careful about cutting and chopping vegetables and herbs because the knives are sharp. An idea for next time might be to add kawakawa shortbread. I felt good when I was cutting as I was on a roll!
