On Monday, we were visited by the students and leaders from our two neighbouring Catholic Colleges, St Catherine’s and St Patrick’s College.
Two of our Year 8 boys and two Year 8 girls welcomed and introduced our visitors to the staff and Year 7-8 students. Prior to the introductions they researched the history of the two schools and found out some interesting information about Mr Bryan form St Catherine’s and Mr Savali from St Pat’s College.
St Catherine’s College: Manuela welcomed Mr Bryan who she said was appointed principal of St Catherine’s College at the start of 2018. She explained there was a special powhiri to welcome Mr Bryan, his family as well as new students and staff starting that year. Prior to working at St Catherine’s, Mr Bryan taught for twelve years at Sacred Heart Girls College in Hawkes Bay. His wife is also a teacher who taught at Wellington Girls College. Manuela thanked Mr Bryan, Hanna and Lupe for making the time to speak to our senior students.
Rose next told the story of St Catherine’s College, which is over 100 years old. Rose explained that the college was established by the Sisters of Mercy and is named after St Catherine of Sienna. She told the staff that the school originally had both boys and girls. The school motto is, Mercy and Wisdom.
St Patrick’s College: Krishiv welcomed Mr Savali, Kahurangi and Max back to Holy Cross School. He explained that Holy Cross was the first school Mr Savali taught at once he graduated from Victoria University. Krishiv told the staff that Mr Savali then travelled overseas to London, as his sister had inspired him to travel. When he returned to NZ he taught for 10 years at St Pat’s College Town then St Pat’s College Silverstream. This year, 2020 he was appointed Rector of St Pat’s College, the first Pasifika Rector.
Luke next shared with the staff some facts he had found out about St Patrick’s College. He explained that St Patrick's College was originally founded by Archbishop Redwood in 1885 and constructed on a site in Cambridge Terrace, Wellington. The College takes its name from Saint Patrick, the inspirational saint of Ireland. Luke explained that in 1931 the boarding part of the college moved to Silverstsream and that college became known as St Pat’s Silverstream. In 1979 St Pat’s Town moved from the city to the current site in Kilbirnie, the boys and staff all walked through town to the new college. Luke told the staff the St Pat’s motto is, Sectare Fidem - Hold Firm to the Faith. Luke said he, Krishiv and the Year 8 boys are looking forward to joining St Pat’s next year.
I would like to congratulate these senior students for stepping up as leaders and Living the Holy Cross Way by welcoming others, showing courage and saying ‘Yes’ when offered this leadership opportunity.

This Friday 19 June we celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart. I would like to share a simple yet powerful prayer that reminds of Jesus’ presence in our Lives and His deep love for us. It is a prayer of comfort, a prayer of hope.
“Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I put my trust in you.”
The Feast of the Sacred Heart reminds us of our own call to mission. This week let us pray in grateful thanks for the Sacred Heart of Jesus, lifting up our schools, our Nation, indeed the whole world, to the One in whom we place all of our trust. He will not disappoint; His Heart still beats with Mercy and Love for the world.
