The last couple weeks have been busy for the senior syndicate teachers and students as they prepared to go to camp Kaitoke. I had the pleasure of attending the camp for the 3 days whilst connecting with our student leaders and new students to the school. I have been to lots of camps, but this one was special for me attending as the Principal. During camp, we focused on 3 key things;
- Having loads of fun!
- Our theme for the year “Kaitiakitanga”
- Living the Holy Cross WAY!
Here are a few moments I was privileged to be a part of:
Whānau moments:
- New students creating friendships with their peers.
- Students sitting with different people at meal times and during activities.
- Everyone was invited to play games and hang out.
- Students creating connections with people they wouldn’t normally hang out with.
Aroha moments:
- Current students teaching new students the Holy Cross WAY!
- Students having mana enhancing interactions with each other.
- Supporting those that found things hard like a fear of heights, the dark or being away from home.
YES! moments:
- Giving new activities a go, especially abseiling and the flying fox.
- Learning how to be away from parents at night.
- Learning how to be independent and problem solving issues like losing things, overcoming fears and how to deal with different social situations.
Kaitiaki moments:
- Understanding that natural resources are limited and we need to protect them. For example; short showers, not wasting food and looking after the plants and land around us.
- Protecting our own mana and the mana of others by living the Holy Cross WAY!
- Put ourselves in other people’s shoes to understand what is important to them.
I would like to thank a few people. Tēnā rawa atu koutou. Our parent helpers - Bridget, Ema, Steve & Jeremy. Our teachers - Ben, Miss Petris, Mrs Stefanidis and Kate. Our families - for helping to fundraise, baking yummy treats and supporting us to be ready for camp and lastly, the students for showing Whānau, Aroha and YES! They were kind, they were inclusive and they were brave!
Ngā mihi nui,
Tala

Catholic Character - Simone Meech Acting DRS
On Monday 12th February our teachers participated in a commissioning Mass at St Mary of the Angels. Archbishop Paul and fellow priests celebrated Mass for educators from Catholic primary and secondary schools in the North Island Archdiocese of Wellington. The Mass recognised recipients in the Wellington Archdiocese who have taken up additional study and Professional Development in Catholic Education.
Ash Wednesday on 14th February marked the beginning of Lent. This is a special time before Easter where we get ready and think about our relationship with Jesus. It lasts for 40 days, just like when Jesus spent time without eating in the wilderness. Holy Cross will be using the Caritas Program caritas.org.nz to guide some of the activities that our tamarki/ children will do to prepare for lent. The Caritas theme for Lent 2024 is “The Time is Now! Ko Tēnei tonu te Wā!” As we focus on the three pillars of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving during Lent, we naturally connect with God and look to serve others. It is indeed a time to renew our relationship with God and to consider practical ways we can be bearers of God’s love to those around us. As Pope Francis says, “Our life is made of time and time is God's gift, and it is therefore important to make use of it by performing good and fruitful actions.’”

Here's what we have been doing .....

Room 5 Garden to Table 27th February 2024
Gardener of the day - Anira
Today my group the mushrooms were in the kitchen. Declan and Asher came to ask for apples so Zoe and I went to the Peace garden and picked up apples off the ground. We picked more apples around the garden and gave them a good wash.
I liked cutting up the a apples and eating them as well. They were juicy, crunchy and sour. There were huge as well as tiny apples.
We need to be careful in the kitchen cutting the apples. We also need to be careful in the garden when we were cutting veges and fruits. We also need to be careful not to step on any plants, veges, fruits and flowers.
I would add honey to the apple muffin recipe. I learned that you cut off the bad parts of the veges and we don’t just pick the good ones.
My favourite activity was washing the apples as it made me feel refreshed and cool!
Chef of the day - Mila
Today in the kitchen we made apple muffins. Everyone was chopping up apples. Hawi was mixing flour, sugar and cinnamon all together. Amaya and Nerine were mixing eggs, oil and milk. The mixture looked like apple and caramel,
I thought it was a good recipe because it would taste delicious with all the effort put into it. I thought it was good because some of the apples we cut up were not that nice. We made them look better after though.
We need to be careful in the kitchen not to miss bits where there are bugs in the fruit or you will be eating bugs! We had to be careful not to cut our fingers. I wouldn’t change anything about this recipe as it looks yum but maybe could add pineapple.
My favourite activity was cutting up the apple. Seeing the apples rotten, mouldy and fresh made me happy.
Just a quick note from Inspire Photography. Soon the photo gallery will go online. This is where whānau can view and order their favourite photos. The first two weeks of the ordering period will be for fundraising for our school and 10% of all sales will go back to our school.
A couple of weeks after this ordering period closes, the orders will be delivered to school.
The gallery will remain up for one year, so don't stress about missing the deadline, however the fundraising period for our school is only available for the first 2 weeks so we would really appreciate you ordering photos in this period.
