‘Thank you’ morning tea.
Last Friday we hosted 45 people at our Thank You morning tea. Schools are places that run with the help and support of a wider community so it was very satisfying to bring people together to acknowledge the contribution they had made to the function of Holy Cross School.
It also provided a great opportunity for our senior students to be leaders, to give thank you speeches, welcome guests and to MC the event. We also added to our program the opportunity for our Culture group to perform and for members of our school who learn music from Arohanui Strings to share their talents.
A big thank you to students who contributed to the event- I received many positive comments about the quality of student performance; our tamariki made us proud.
Up and coming events
Our year is winding up but kaiako/teachers are still focused on providing good learning experiences for students despite the many interruptions that can sneak in.
Swimming trial for 2024 for all Year 6/7 students on Friday December 1st.
We are looking into having swimming lessons in term 2 of 2024, through Little Makos swim school who function out of Miramar North swimming pool. In order to make sure we can meet the needs of our seniors, we are going to have a trial session with an instructor on Friday December the 1st. If we go with this option, sessions will be broader than just swimming lessons for our senior students and will also include water safety activities and water polo skills. Using a more accessible venue will significantly reduce costs and free up our funds for more trips and EOTC experiences. We will keep you posted about the outcome of our trial.
Year 6 and 7 bring togs and towel on Friday December 1st.
Reports out - Friday December 1st.
Check your child’s bag for their reports.
Monday 4th December - Junior trip to the zoo.
Lucy is looking for parent helpers for this trip so please get in touch if you are available.
Christmas Picnic and Liturgy - Tuesday 5th December.
Come and have your picnic dinner on the grass outside at 5pm before joining us at 6pm for our Christmas Liturgy in the hall. This will be more low key this year as we sing carols and reflect as a whānau on Jesus and His place in the Christmas season. We will also announce our special Kaitiakitanga award. This is an important part of our school calendar and we encourage you all to come along and support this event.
Thursday 7th December - class visits for 2024.
Students have the opportunity to connect with their 2024 class on Thursday 7th December from 9-11am.
Tuesday 12th December Year 8 graduation.

Friday 15th December Last day of school.
School ends at 12.30. You are more than welcome to join us for our final liturgy together between 10 and 11am.
The end of year brings opportunity for reflection and acknowledgement. One of our newest awards given out for the first time in 2022 at our whole school Christmas Liturgy is our Kaitiakitanga award- in memory of Jimmy Stokes, our wonderful caretaker, donated by his wife Maureen. The spirit of this award is to recognise someone who is a Kaitiaki or guardian of our environment and resources here at school. A biblical term that reflects this is stewardship - one who is wise in caring for people, places and resources.
The other lovely aspect of this award is that staff lead students through a process where they can nominate others to receive this award, looking carefully at a criteria that helps them make a choice amongst their peers. The student nominated people for 2023 are :
Room 1 Maxwell Clark
Room 2 Finn McLaren Bacon
Room 3 Nerine Arellano
Room 5 Moana Sullivan
Room 6 Ezira Perez
Room 7 Kahmaia Vitale
Room 11 Libby Vink
Room 12 Kalypso Cham
Last Thursday at morning tea the staff voted for the person who best shows the spirit of Kaitiakitanga from these people. You will have to come along to our Christmas Liturgy Picnic to find out who will be the 2023 recipient of the Holy Cross Kaitiakitanga- Tuesday 5th December. 5pm for the picnic, 6pm for the liturgy.
We would like to thank everyone who contributed their New World stickers to Holy Cross School. We collected enough stickers which enabled us to purchase fry pans, a large pot and utensils which will all come in very handy for our Garden to Table.
On the sports side, we collected enough yummy stickers from parents through the year which gave us $187.00 worth of sports equipment. A big thank you to all you wonderful parents.
On Wednesday, Holy Cross touch rugby teams play primary school touch rugby at Wakefield Park. We have been playing for the last 5 weeks and have been having lots of fun. Our junior team has been doing very well. They have learnt the basics of the touch rugby game and always come away feeling happy. Our team has been doing very, very well and have learnt to be a solid defensive team. We also welcome Kahu from St Anthony who plays in our team.

On Tuesday the 21st November, 10 Athletes from Holy Cross School competed in the Wellington Interzone Athletics. The weather really reflected what Wellington weather is like - wet and misty. There were a lot of athletes representing their schools; some were very talented. I saw from a distance athletes throwing so far it seemed like they were throwing for miles! All our athletes did their best and represented our school well- GO HOLY CROSS!

A Merry Vinnies Christmas- donate a gift.
We are supporting this St Vinnies initiative to support members of our community this coming Christmas. If you can help by donating a gift for a child we have a Christmas box in the office for your donation. We realise that Christmas and holidays can be very expensive and demanding time of the year so there is no pressure for families to donate - only if you are able to and we thank you for always being generous.
According to the Maramataka today (14 November) is a reasonably good day for
planting kumara. We will plant our tipu facing the north, so that they get good sun.
We will plant them in the shape of a ‘J’, so that the roots don't go too deep in the soil
but will grow along and form tubers. We will leave them in the ground for about 130
days and hopefully eat them at Matariki 2024.
I went in the garden and made a new space for the kumara plants. We used the spade.
Today we made Cheese Puffs. Cleo and I went to the garden to get silverbeet, parsley, kale and some greens. I put cheese in the bowl. I get to have a big knife to cut the silverbeet into little pieces. We all had turns folding the food in the bowl. When I put the cheese in, it was two full cups and ½ cup of milk. The dry food with the dry food and the wet food with the wet food. When it was cooked it tasted better than it looked! By Hosanna
Today I am the chef of the day and we are making Herby Cheese Puffs with Spinach. We did some cutting and we cut broccoli and dill and vegetables then parsley and we washed our board. Then we did some writing. We put the cheese in a big bowl and I cracked two eggs then Cleo put the milk in the measuring bowl then I mixed it and then I put it in the big bowl and then we mixed it. Then we looked at the Kamokamo. Then we ate it and it was soooo good and it tasted amazing. By Ceydeaz
First we washed our hands and the we went to the table to wait for Aleksandra to tell us what to do. Hosanna and I went to get spinach, silverbeet, parsley, dill, kale, broccoli. Then we came back, then we started to cut. Ruby, Ceydeaz and I all worked together. I put the flour into the cup and then Ceydeaz put it in the sieve and then she shaked it into the bowl. The ingredients were baking powder, flour, broccoli, kale, parsley, dill, spinach, silverbeet. Then we washed our boards and then we started to write. I hope they are mouthwatering. By Cleo
In the garden I first started ripping and chopping carbon and nitrogen and put them in the buckets that said the labels of carbon and nitrogen. Then went to plant some seeds. I wrote what I had for breakfast and how it was made and drew what I ate. Then I did a quiz and Thinbeth and I won some plants as a prize. By Hendrix
Today at Garden to Table we did seed sowing. Pumpkin seeds take about 14 to 16 weeks. I ate soil for breakfast because I had fruit for breakfast and fruit comes from trees and trees grow in soil. We had a garden test. We had to sort them into A, B, C or D and I did. It was so easy. We had to sort vegetables and tools. By Emily
Today in the garden Emily and I put seeds in the soil and I put a little bit of water then we swapped groups and Emily and I were doing something else. We were answering questions. What did we eat for breakfast? And Emily had fruit and me too! And we swapped groups again and we were ripping cardboard. By Nitya
